At Dental Arts of Hedgesville, we take pride in both the quality of our dental care and the range of the services we provide. Of course we take care of your twice-yearly professional cleanings and exams. We place bridges and crowns as needed. We provide sealants for the molars of our little patients. We replace old silver amalgam fillings with tooth-colored composite resin. We keep track of wisdom teeth descending in our teenage patients.
And we place our own dental implants. That way you can trust Dr. Brandon Smith’s specialized training in the placement of implants, you don’t have to get used to another provider, and you don’t have to traipse to another office for the repeated appointments necessary when getting an implant.
What is a dental implant?
Named for the titanium screw-shaped prosthetic that anchors this tooth replacement, dental implants are far and away the best option for replacing a missing tooth or a tooth that needs extraction. The titanium implant is screwed down into the socket occupied originally by the natural tooth root. Then the jawbone needs time to grow around the implant, making it a part of the jaw. This process is called osseointegration and is possible because the human body accepts titanium (it’s also used in artificial joints). This process takes up to six months, depending on how fast your jawbone grows new mass.
Once your jawbone has fully integrated your implant you return to Dental Arts of Hedgesville for a second appointment. First Dr. Smith creates another small incision in the gums to access the implant. He then attaches a post, called the abutment, to the implant base. The small incision is closed and we let the gums heal and grow around the post for three weeks.
When this has happened you return for your third appointment and Dr. Smith attaches the artificial porcelain tooth to the post. Now the procedure is complete and you can go out and immediately begin using your new tooth. You can eat whatever you want, and your dental implant will likely last the remainder of your life.
What’s the big deal about having my implant done at Dental Arts of Hedgesville?
As you can see from the process description above, getting a dental implant involves three appointments, possibly four. Having to head to another provider for these appointments just wastes your time.
You know Dr. Smith and his team at Dental Arts of Hedgesville, and so it’s easy to add this procedure. For instance, you can schedule a twice-yearly professional cleaning and exam to coincide with the placement of a post or of your artificial tooth, if you like
This is a long process, and we’re there with you if you have any problems or questions along the way.
